[크리스천 잉글리시 7]


주님을 경외하는 것이 지식의 첫걸음이지만, 어리석은 사람은 지혜와 훈계를 멸시한다. (잠언 1장 7절)

지혜자는 이 한 문장을 자신이 가르친 모든 지혜의 기초로 삼고 있다. 여호와를 경외한다는 것은 하나님의 자녀들이 겸손하고 조심스럽게 자신을 하나님의 계명에 굴복시키는 자발적인 순종을 의미한다. 우리 주위에 있는 많은 사람들이 지혜와 훈계를 멸시하는 이유는 하나님을 두려워하는 마음이 그들에게 없기 때문이며, 하나님을 경외하는 태도의 진정한 가치를 깨닫지 못하기 때문이다.

일단 본문을 둘로 나누어 하나씩 정리해보자. 

   1) 주님을 경외하는 것이 지식의 첫걸음이다.
      The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
      = The fear of the Lord is the start of knowledge
      = To fear the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
      = Knowledge begins with the fear of the Lord.
      = Knowledge begins with respect for the Lord.
      = To have knowledge, you must first fear the Lord.

   2) 어리석은 사람은 지혜와 훈계를 멸시한다.
      Fools despise wisdom and discipline.
      = The foolish despise wisdom and instruction.
      = The foolish have no use for wisdom and teaching.
      = Stupid people have no respect for wisdom and instruction.

위에서 제시한 두 개의 문장을 접속사 but를 사용하여 연결시켜도 좋고, 세미콜론으로 연결시켜도 무방하다.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
= Knowledge begins with respect for the Lord, but the foolish hate wisdom and teaching.
= The fear of the Lord is the start of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
